Program Leadership

S/C Bob Amenta directs and oversees the program, culture, curriculum and growth.  Under Bob's leadership Westlake Yacht Club earned the Junior Sailing Program of the year in 2018 from the Pacific Coast Yachting Association.

The Junior Sailing Program is headed by the Rear Commodore, Arvid Raulinaitis and assisted by Junior Sailing Advisors S/C Melessa Lee and S/C Howard Brenner. 

 

Program Costs

For Students Ages 9-18

$450 per session for Children or Grandchildren of current WYC Members. 

$500 per session for Non-WYC Member Sailors that sign up for 1 session

 $475 per session for Non-WYC Members signing up for multiple sessions at the same time

Registration for multiple sessions is encouraged to improve sailing skills.  Fees include one annual Junior WYC Membership for the participant. Junior Membership includes complimentary sailing on "Wet Wednesday" afternoons in July, Aug & Sept.   BBQ and Happy Hour on our dock for parents and club members.  See the WYC calendar tab for specific "Wet Wednesday" sailing dates and times.

2025 Course Outline

The Right Sailboat for Each Junior Sailor

  •  
  •  15 RS Tera Boats for all beginners and those ready to begin regatta training -- a great boat for beginners through advanced junior sailors.  Minimum sailor weight is 60 lbs.

 

  •  
  •  5 Laser Boats for sailors ready to enjoy the challenge and speed of a world class boat.  Great for both those having mastered the dinghy class and adult training. Minimum sailor weight 100 lbs.

 

  •  
  • CFJ Boats 3 CFJ Boats for those ready for 2 person sailing.  These are great for intermediate to advanced sailing as a team.    Minimum weight 100 lbs. per person.

 

  •  
  • Zest Boat
  •  1 Zest Boat (yellow sail) for the very tall beginner or adult wanting to sail a comfortable and very stable boat. Minimum weight 80 lbs

Sessions have a limited number of sailors and fill quickly  

Please Note: There are no waiting lists. Until May 15, 2025 there is a $25 cancellation fee.  May 16, 2025 and after there are NO refunds,

Session Details:

All sessions are taught by Certified U.S. Sailing Instructors certified in CPR, First Aid, Water Safety Procedures as well as boat rigging and derigging, emergency responses, working the wind, docking, regatta training and daily racing. Students receive classroom instruction and supervised sailing on the lake.  All students receive certificates of completion at the end of the week. 

  • Each Session is 5 days, Monday - Friday from 12:30pm to 4:30pm.
  • Students are involved in outdoor on the water instruction sessions
  • Each session is limited to the sailor's boat choice and qualifications.
  • Students are divided according to age and demonstrated sailing skill level
  • All Students/Sailors must have basic swimming skills, weigh at least 60 pounds, bring and wear a life jacket, sunscreen and bottle water.
  • Each sailor will be assigned a personal sailboat for which they are responsible.
  • Graduation Certificates and Junior Membership Applications Awarded on Fridays each week.
